Jonathan Elmer is Associate Professor
of English and American Studies at Indiana University. He is author
of Reading at the Social Limit: Affect, Mass Culture, and Edgar
Allan Poe (Stanford 1995), and articles on topics ranging from Richard
Wright to Hannibal Lecter, Thomas Jefferson to Jacques Lacan and
Niklas Luhmann. The essay presented here is drawn from his current
book project, "Not One: Chief Logan's Legacies in the American
Archive."
Alois Hahn, Professor of Sociology at
