Dirk Baecker, born 1955, is professor
of sociology at the University of Witten / Herdecke, Germany. His
areas of research are general sociology, economic sociology, organizational
theory, management teaching. Recent publications: Problems of Form
(ed., 1999), Wozu Kultur? (2000), Wozu Systeme? (2002).
Christoph Deutschmann, born 1946, is professor
of sociology at the University of Tübingen, Germany. His research
areas cover industrial and economic sociology and management research.

Michael Power is P.D.Leake Professor
of Accounting and Co-director of the Centre for the Analysis of
Risk and Regulation at the London School of Economics, where he
has worked since 1987. Read Philosophy, Politics and Economics at
Oxford. Doctorate in philosophy from Cambridge University in 1983
and qualified as a chartered accountant with Deloitte Haskins &
Sells in 1987. Member of the UK Chartered Institute of Taxation
since 1990. Former Faculty member of the European Institute for
Advanced Studies in Management, Brussels and a former Coopers &
Lybrand Fellow. Has acted as advisor to the National Audit Office
and the Cabinet Office. Research and teaching interests focus mainly
on financial accounting, auditing and risk management; recent publications
include Accounting and Science (Cambridge University Press, 1996),
The Audit Society: Rituals of Verification (Oxford University Press,
1999) and The Audit Implosion: Regulating Risk from the Inside (ICAEW,
2000).
Dr. Harold Salzman is a sociologist at
the Center for Industrial Competitiveness, University of Massachusetts
Lowell, USA. He has studied technology, workplace transformation,
and organizational change in large global firms over the past decade;
studies of corporate strategy, and of engineering. He is co-author
of Software By Design: Shaping Technology and the Workplace (Oxford
University Press 1994) and other publications on technology, work,
and organizations.

Harrison C. White, Professor of Sociology
at Columbia University, New York. One line of his current research
melds economic sociology with mathematical modeling (Markets from
Networks, Princeton University Press 2002); another meshes social
network with discourse analyses. The theoretical foundation of both
was laid in Identity and Control, published in 1992. He teaches
courses also in the sociology of art. White collaborates with an
INRA interdisciplinary team in field studies of how the Languedoc-Rousillon
wine sector has been evolving. White has also taught at five other
universities (Arizona [Tucson], Carnegie-Mellon, Chicago, Edinburgh
and Harvard) and has worked in several applied research organizations
and business schools. He earned doctorates at MIT (theoretical physics)
and Princeton (sociology) and is a member of the National Academy
of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences
