Boris Holzer / Johannes F.K. Schmidt, Theory of Networks or Network Theory?
Over the past few years, the concept of networks has gained enormous popularity among scientists and a general public, sometimes at the expense of its conceptual clarity. This article discusses efforts to elaborate a theoretically sound concept of networks. Neither the empirical focus of social network analysis (SNA) nor the interdisciplinary thrust behind „small world“ research in physics and other natural sciences has much to offer in this regard. The sociological specification of an interdisciplinary concept of networks leads to the question of whether network theory should be understood as an alternative to existing theories or whether networks should be regarded as particular objects of sociological inquiry. While Harrison White’s constructivist network theory pursues the former direction, Niklar Luhmann’s systems theory opts for the latter. Despite these diverging starting points there are a couple of commonalities between the two approaches.

Veronika Tacke, Differentiation and / or networking? Friction, convergence and systems theoretical possibilities of continuing the network discussion
Starting from the assumption that systems (differentiation) and networks (networking) both „exist“ although the respective theories are basically incommensurable, the article asks how both concepts can be combined and approached in a coherent description. Heuristically drawing on the abstract idea that (communicative) distinctions can re-enter into themselves (Re-Entry), the article in a first step reconstructs existing arguments to demonstrate a variety of ways in which the difference system/network re-enters in itself. In a second step the supplementary perspectives and strains, which all the re-entries somehow imply and point to, are reconstructed as an important theoretical and empirical insight. They finally appear as a relevant opportunity and threshold for theory building on social networks within the context of systems theory.

Systems, Network, and Culture

Dirk Baecker, Systems, Network, and Culture
The paper compares social systems theory and social network theory in terms of what it is they respectively seek to elucidate. Whereas systems theory focuses on problems of difference and reproduction, network theory deals with problems of identity and control, the former privileging communication and the latter action. To understand their different foci, it may help to keep in mind that systems theory is a child of computing's formative years, whereas the more recent success of network theory, despite its roots in a far older tradition, accompanies the advent of the Internet. The paper goes on to compare the two theories with respect to questions of mathematical modeling, culture, and self-reference, which interestingly are closely related. It concludes by referring to Bronislaw Malinowski's "scientific theory of culture" to propose a mathematical modeling of culture, which uses George Spencer-Brown's notion of form to combine variables of communication, consciousness, and life into one network relying on three systems capable of reproducing themselves.

Jan Fuhse, The Communicative Construction of Actors in Networks
The essay combines the theory of social networks of Harrison White and others with Niklas Luhmann’s concept of communication. Networks emerge out of the process of communication as structures of meaning. Communication is routinely attributed to the action of personal identities. Thus, actors are constructed as relatively stable entities with specific dispositions for action. In this way, expectations about the interdependent behaviour of actors evolve in relational narratives (‘stories’). Social relationships can thus be conceived of as social systems which span and structure various interaction episodes. In social relationships, communication always proceeds from previous relationship communication by referring mostly to the ‘utterance’ component. Social networks link the actors constructed in communication by way of relational stories in dyadic relationship systems. They are structures of meaning produced in the process of communication, and stabilize and change in its course.

Christian Morgner, World media events as networks
This paper discusses the phenomenon of world media events. In the current stage of sociological research it has remained neglected in an empirical as well as theoretical sense. The aim is, therefore, to develop theoretical terms with regard to selected case studies, namely, 9/11, the assassination of John F. Kennedy and the sinking of the Titanic. It is, thereby, the attempt to analyse the inner logic that enables the formation of such events. Apart from the means of system theory, this paper relies on other concepts, such as the network theory of Harrison White. On the basis of ideas like netdom, hypercycle and guiding distinction, the text develops a rich inventory of terms to describe temporal, factual and social aspects of world media events.

The Behavior of Cultural Networks

Stephan Fuchs, The Behavior of Cultural Networks
While network theory, until very recently, has paid scant attention to culture, systems theory views it is a semantic echo to social structure. In contrast, it is proposed here that cultures are networks in their own right, with structural and behavioral properties amenable to network analysis. One important network outcome is the differentiation into cores and peripheries, observed as well in semantic holism. On this basis, it is possible to sociologize philosophy, such as Kants distinction between analytical and synthetic statements. Strong network cores support logic and realism, especially when the means of cultural production are monopolized within hegemonic organizations, such as some states and churches.

Bruno Latour meets Harrison C. White.

Henning Laux, Bruno Latour meets Harrison C. White. On the sociological capability of network research
The article compares the sociological contributions of Bruno Latour and Harrison C. White. This connects two authors who are usually, in research, standing curiously indifferent next to each other. In the course of a confronting lecture, central divergences, convergences and complementarities become evident among the two network theories. The implicitly (or explicitly) argued thesis of an incompatibility must be suspended on closer examination. Comparing the two, a network theoretical contribution to sociological theorizing is explicated. it appears that White and Latour can already offer several innovative and plausible alternatives to the established sociology in their current theoretical constructions.

Norman Braun / Thomas Gautschi, Social Networks and Rational Choice
According to a widely accepted view, social networks and their features are independent variables in rational choice analyses. However, rational choice theorists also explain the emergence, stability, and change of social networks and their consequences. Work on typical exchange patterns and exchange profit splits, the emergence and stabilization of relations of trust, and partner choice and cooperation in networks serves as an illustration.
